SustainAbility Project
|
Across the community, Victorians are being asked to live more sustainably. Households are being asked to save water and energy, and to reduce, reuse and recycle. But this information is not accessible for people with disability in group homes. How can we support our residents to live sustainably? Our SustainAbility Project is funded through the Victorian government's Sustainability Fund. We are working with people we support and staff to save water, energy and waste in our group homes. As a result of the Green House pilot program we have developed a SustainAbility Star-ter Kit for people with disability and disability service providers. This is freely available. Our HomeChoices houses have all signed up for SustainAbility Stars, our 6-star accreditation program. On Sunday 10th October, Global Day of Action on Climate Change, we held a Sustainablilty Open Day at a residential home in Sunshine. Our aim is to show the community that the people we support are making a difference for the environment. In March 2011, we have launched our Regional Green Teams which will be working to build a culture of sustainability within our other services and operations at E.W. Tipping Foundation, and our residents at Swan Hill have had an opportunity to showcase their sustainable actions at the Swan Hill Harmony Day celebrations. In support of Sustainable House Day on 11 September 2011 we showcased the everyday actions our residents take towards sustainable living at the Maffra Sustainability Open House. The residents of our Maffra group home were empowered to take an active role in implementing household sustainability.
