Fiona's Story

Fiona has cerebral palsy and has limited mobility. For more than 40 years she lived with and was cared for by her mother. Fiona was always encouraged to be independent by her family. For ten years, she had a job as an office assistant, helping with photocopying, filing and other administration duties.

Unfortunately Fiona’s mother recently became ill with cancer and passed away. Sadly in this situation many people with a disability often have no option but to move into a nursing home or aged care facility. For people like Fiona, only aged in her 40’s, this is not a suitable place for her to live.

Through the Department of Housing, Fiona found a home of her own but, even though she has a sister living nearby, needed support to live there independently.

Each day, our carers help Fiona to get ready for the day ahead, and provide help with cooking and cleaning. Fiona can choose when to get up, go to bed and go out to the shops. Our carers are more like Fiona’s friends.

For Fiona’s sister, Michelle, our support gives her peace of mind. “With three children to look after my life is very busy, it’s good that I do not have to worry about Fiona’s care.”

“I am happy and I love the freedom,” says Fiona, about living in her own home.
