Lyn's Story

Lyn's storyLyn has always been a very busy person. She volunteers at a local day centre program for people with a disability, helps to run a community group, and likes catching up with friends, and going shopping. When not out and about, Lyn enjoys knitting and making jewellery. When she was a child she had polio, and the pain from post-polio syndrome
gradually reduced her mobility. Lyn has now been in a wheelchair for 12 years.

When the pain from Lyn’s arms and shoulders made working too difficult, she took the opportunity to pursue other activities. She has recently been a supporter of the National Disability Insurance Scheme and participated in the transport forum on taxis chaired by Professor Alan Fells. Lyn is passionate about the rights of people with a disability because “I am able to speak up when others can’t.”

Once a week she now volunteers, supporting people with an intellectual disability – she helps three women make necklaces and bracelets, some of which are sold locally and others are gifted to friends and family. Lyn has built up a strong friendship with these women, who see her as their friend not just someone in a wheelchair. Sometimes they even ask if Lyn will be taking a taxi home or walking!

Recently, Lyn noticed that these activities and the exertion of continuing to clean, cook and look after herself independently were taking a toll on her health. Breathing became harder and Lyn had to slow down and take regular breaks.

Fortunately Lyn was able to access support through our in-home care service. Our support workers assist Lyn with the housework, having a shower and other activities around the home.

Our support means Lyn can live as she chooses and not in an aged care facility. She can continue to do the
things that are important to her and that she wants to do, such as volunteer and support other people with a disability.

Lyn says, “Daily life became a struggle and the carers are helping me no end. Support gives me my independence, I
live as I choose. I do not want to go into a home”.
