New report ranks Australia low in disability outcomes
Thu, Dec 1 2011
PriceWaterhouseCoopers this week launched a national report on "Disability expectations: Investing in a better life, a stronger Australia".
The report found that, in some disability outcomes, Australia ranks last on the list of the richest nations in the world who are a part of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
This means that currently:
• An estimated 45 per cent of people with a disability live in poverty in Australia
• People with a disability are likely to be more than two and half times poorer than the rest of the population
• Only 31 per cent of people with a disability are likely to be employed in comparison to 83 per cent of people without a disability
• Carers have the lowest well-being rates of any studied group
CEO Richard Dent was one of a number of selected thought leaders who contributed to the report, which sets forth principles for an inclusive Australia and a well-functioning National Disability Insurance Scheme.
The report has been commended by Governor General Quentin Bryce.
