National Safe Work Month

It’s October, which brings with it longer days, warmer weather and excitement for summer. But did you know that October is also National Safe Work Month? It’s a good time to remember that although a safety incident can occur in any workplace, a moment’s forethought can prevent harm.

The theme for this year’s National Safe Work Month is ‘a moment is all it takes’.

At House with No Steps and The Tipping Foundation we are committed to building a safe and healthy workplace for our staff and customers. That’s why we’re encouraging our staff to take a ‘safety moment’ every day. This could be as simple as talking with your team about potential hazards and risk, and how you can prevent accidents occurring.

You can take a moment to review some of the key work health and safety topics this month

Safe Work Australia has published five steps to a safe and healthy workplace:

Design safe

Think about the work you do and ways you can make it safer. Designing your work or workspace so that risks are reduced makes for a safer and healthier environment for you and the people you work with.

Source safe

Make sure you have the right knowledge and equipment to do your job well. If unsure ask for help and work together to resolve any issues.

Use safe

Make sure you talk about health and safety with your team. Look out for your workmates and customers. Don’t hesitate to stop work if you don’t believe it’s safe and then talk about the best way to move forward safely.

Keep safe

Damaged or poorly maintained equipment can cause serious injuries. Make sure regular maintenance occurs and you report any broken equipment or unsafe systems as well as removing any dangerous items from use until fixed or replaced.

Making sure your workplace is safe is a continuous cycle of improvement. National Safe Work Month serves as a good reminder, but health and safety should be considered every day of the year! Discuss safety issues regularly with others and at each team meeting.
