Our Positive Behaviour Support Framework reinforces a consistent, collective and positive approach to intervention.
We have developed a model of support called The Tipping Way. We focus on the individual, practice Person Centred Active Support and measure our clients’ progress against their set goals using the Outcome Star model.
The Tipping Way relies heavily on investing in people with complex needs and their local connections to assist them to develop strategies that:
- Improves their quality of life
- Minimises behaviours of concern
- Enables individuals to access their community and mainstream connections
- Enables clients to integrate into their community
As a teenager, Tash lived in a children’s respite facility. Not the best place to call home but perhaps better than no home at all. When she turned 18 she was no longer considered a child and had to leave the respite facility. There were very few options available for her. Her mother lived interstate and her father was involved but initially had different ideas on how to deal with some of Tash’s challenging behaviours.
So while the welfare and getting a place to call home was everybody’s top priority perhaps the pathway to those goals looked a little different depending on who you spoke to.
Tash was understandably not particularly happy living in a respite facility with people coming and going all the time. It was decided with Tash and those that were close to her that the best pathway for success was independent living.
Our Positive Behavioural Support Unit worked with Tash’s support team to help them understand her behaviours and how best to positively respond and manage and also how to avoid her triggers. This consistent approach is key.
While moving house can be traumatic for anyone, having a dependable support team and a consistent approach was fundamental to Tash’s new living arrangements working well.
New staff were slowly added in to her support team and were given the training and the skills to best work with Tash. Everybody brought something different to the table. These staff were able to help her foster a stronger relationship with her father who she now sees every Sunday at the local market. The staff were also able to link her to programs that nurtured her love of the arts.
Tash has now been living by herself for the last 18 months and loves her new home.
